The effects of indoor vs outdoor housing on pig welfare

چکیده

It was observed that when compared with indoor pigs, outdoor piglets spent significantly more time exploring and feeding and less time belly-nosing, showing oro-nasal or agonistic behaviour towards their pen mates. Belly-nosing and oro-nasal behaviours generally are considered aggressive rather than natural (Petersen, 1994). Höetzel et al. (2004) proposed that the decrease in unnatural behaviour was not simply due to increased spatial distance between piglets but due to a more interesting, complex environment available to explore, removing frustration and associated behaviours.

Effects of Housing Systems on Behaviour, Performance and Welfare of Fast-growing Broilers

This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of different housing systems on behavioral activities, welfare and meat quality of fast-growing broilers. Two hundred broilers were allocated into two housing systems: indoor housing vs indoor with outdoor access. Their general behavior (feeding, drinking, fighting, standing, lying, walking, investigating, dust-bathing and preening) was observed, an...

Alternative housing systems for pigs: Influences on growth, composition, and pork quality1

Effects of pig birth (first 3-wk period) and rearing environments on growth and muscle quality characteristics of loins were evaluated in three experiments over seasons in west Texas and central Missouri. Housing systems included indoor slatted-floor buildings, indoor deep-bedded buildings, outdoor housing on dirt, and outdoor housing on alfalfa pasture. Experiments were conducted during the gr...

Effects of Outdoor Housing of Piglets on Behavior, Stress Reaction and Meat Characteristics

Well-designed housing systems are important from the viewpoint of animal welfare and improvement of meat production. In this study, we investigated the effects of outdoor housing of pigs on their behavior, cortisol levels, and meat characteristics. Two groups that were born and raised in a spacious outdoor pen (4×10 m for every two sows) or a minimum-sized standard pen in a piggery (1.9×2.2 m f...

Effects of free-range and confined housing on joint health in a herd of fattening pigs

BACKGROUND Free-range housing, in which pigs have access to both indoor and outdoor areas, is mandatory in organic pig production in Europe, but little is known about the effects of this housing on joint health in pigs. A high level of joint condemnations at slaughter has been reported in organic free-range pigs in Sweden, compared with pigs raised in conventional confined housing. We hypothesi...
